Animal Free Eggs To Become A Reality

by | October 16, 2018

Clara Foods is bringing the world’s first animal free eggs to the market.

San Francisco-based food technology startup raised $1.75 million in investments to fund its groundbreaking product. The animal free eggs are made by brewing yeast and sugar to reproduce proteins without the use of chickens. The product is expected to be available by 2020.

Clara Foods CEO Arturo Elizondo says he was motivated by the state of animal agriculture, especially, the breeding of chickens for food. Saying that approximately one trillion eggs are eaten annually. The world’s craving for eggs is “incredibly unsustainable,” according to Elizondo. He was also horrified by the poor conditions within the industry, saying, “I looked into how incredibly unsustainable animal agriculture is—it really blew my mind, there are more chickens in the US than people, each confined to the area of a piece of paper and never seeing daylight.”

Current farming practices require 600 gallons of water to produce just over a dozen eggs. Clara Foods wants reduce the amount of water and land required to produce animal free eggs while eliminating the risk of foodborne illness, including avian flu and salmonella poisoning.

The tech company is also developing more sustainable baking products, food and beverage ingredients, and nutritional supplements using its unique sugar and yeast engineering processes. The website reads, “Have your cake, and eat it, too. The most powerful ingredients just got a whole lot greener and cleaner.

Arturo says the company asked themselves “Which proteins are the ones for baking? Which foam the best? Which make the lightest meringues and angel food cakes? Which proteins are the best binders out there so you can make really sturdy gluten-free products?”

The company hopes that its product will replace traditional egg whites in pastas, baked goods, and protein supplements.

The egg industry is one of the worst offenders when it comes to cruelty to animals. Hens are tortured, confined and deprived, forced to live a tragic existence. To meet the huge global demand for eggs, farmers breed chickens to lay 10-30 times more than nature intended, which takes a huge toll on their bodies.

Within a couple of years, they can’t physically keep up with the abnormal egg-laying demand and are slaughtered years before the end of their natural lifespan. Male chicks are usually killed upon hatching, as they’re considered useless.
