Backyard Butchers In England Sparks Hygiene Probe

by | September 1, 2018

Neighbors in the town of Dagenham alerted environmental health officials after capturing images of animal carcasses being chopped up on a tarpaulin by backyard butchers in England.

The family were celebrating Eid al-Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice, and were spotted butchering the animals in their property. It is unknown whether they slaughtered the animals at home, or were simply butchering them.

It is traditional for Muslim families who celebrate the festival to sacrifice a goat or sheep and divide it into portions during Eid al-Adha, but is extremely rare for them to do it in their own homes.

Julia McClenaghan, whose house looks over the property said; “It seems one of the least hygienic places to prepare meat, and they were using an old rag to wipe their tools.”

A woman living at the property did confirm they were butchering the animals for the festival but has denied any wrongdoing.

There is no further update on what will happen between the health officials and these backyard butchers in England.
