Cellular Aquaculture Company BlueNalu Scales up
Raise Vegan has earlier reported on lab-grown meat which could potentially be a game changer in the mission to satiate the world’s meat demand, minus the killing. In the same lieu, “cellular aquaculture” is the process developed by BlueNalu to grow seafood from a cellular level using a small biopsy from a sea animal like tuna or crab. Cellular Aquaculture Company Prepares for its Initial Commercialization Phase
The California based company seeks to supplement the current fishing and seafood industry with its ethical aquaculture. But how? Much like lab-grown meat, this company will develop seafood from the fish cells directly, replacing the current practice of catching wild or farming for consumption. BlueNalu claims to develop “an array of seafood products directly from fish cells.” As per their plans, the cellular aquaculture firm will initially develop seafood from crustaceans and mollusks both of which are over-fished, difficult to raise in a farm or primarily imported.
Recently BlueNalu announced its shift into a larger facility for research which will allow employees to complete their initial commercialization goals, as told by the company in a press release. BlueNalu will develop seafood products that are under stress or challenged by the toxins, pollution and other environmental contamination, and will command the premium pricing alongside having high per ca-pita consumption.
According to U.S. Congressman, Scott Peters, a new opportunity for species preservation, ocean sustainability and ultimate availability of seafood is represented by BlueNalu.

Global Seafood Supply Chain: It Kills in Tonnes
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, seafood consumption has doubled over the last 50 years, thereby changing the current seafood industry trying to meet the growing demand. This had led global seafood supply chains into issues like illegal fishing, overfishing, rising ocean temperatures and plastic pollution, among others, all of which are extremely torturous to the aquatic life and unquestionably to the environment.
Companies like BlueNalu aim to extend a helping hand to the issues of the seafood industry with ethical, ocean-friendly and sustainable seafood products that taste equally good without harming sea life. The company’s new 6000 square-foot facility in Sorrento Valley of San Diego currently employs 12 full-time employees alongside a recent announcement of a world-class advisory board for nudging BlueNalu in the right directing.
