Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Can you share more about what led you and Carolyn to found Ecojot in 2007?

Mark: We started designing and producing paper products under the name of MIRAGE in the late 1990s and were thrilled to discover 100% post-consumer recycled paper in 2007. At this time there was an increased awareness of the environmental movement so we decided to change all our paper and board to this and rebrand as Ecojot.

As a fellow paper lover, I was very intrigued to read about Ecojot’s 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Ecojot sources entirely from Cascades mill in Québec, Canada. Can you tell us more about Ecojot’s relationship with this mill and how you came to source all your paper from them?

Mark: They are a real pioneer for recycled paper and were the first company to create 100% post-consumer recycled paper. It’s a process of extracting the usable fibers from paper collected from local recycling programs and remanufacturing from this pulp. We were introduced to them by our paper distributor who is an agent for their products – Ecojot is not big enough to deal directly with the Cascades, but we are very happy to be using their products as they have won many awards for their recycling practices.

All of Ecojot’s inks and glues are vegetable based. Can you tell us more about your and Carolyn’s discovery process for which inks and glues to use?

Mark: Luckily most inks these days are solvent-free, so this was not a problem.

I especially love Ecojot’s ‘Elephant Love for Sheldrick’ series with 50% of proceeds going to The David Sheldrick Elephant Trust. This is fantastic. When was this series inspired and how did you get involved with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust?

Mark: We’ve always made an effort to try and use our business to help improve something. At one point we were donating notebooks and pens to kids who couldn’t afford these basic items and I have made some trips to Haiti and Kenya to help distribute these items. When I was in Kenya I visited the elephant orphanage and was so thrilled to witness the wonderful work they do so we started working with them in late 2017 and have raised over $2000 so far.

Mark: Being vegan I volunteer for Animal Justice whenever I can. They are lawyers who do amazing work through the legal framework in trying to get laws changed so that we can (hopefully) one day treat animals with the respect they deserve. They are funded entirely by donations and I wanted to have beautiful products that would both raise their profile and support them financially.
