NHS’s latest Healthy Start programme provides vouchers that can be exchanged for fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and milk. But the milk offered covers only cow’s milk with options for whole milk, skimmed milk and semi skimmed milk. Vegans are miffed with this latest free milk scheme and rightfully so, since it doesn’t have options for plant based milk.

Taking a cue from the recent developments, The Vegan Society has written to NHS officials to look into the matter and stop discrimination. According to The telegraph, the letter said,

“The convictions of vegans come within the protection of the law and, on the face of it, it appears that the Healthy Start voucher scheme could be inadvertently discriminatory.”

The letter further goes on to say that fortified plant based milk is necessary for vegans as it is important to eat calcium rich food. Vegan milk is a nutritious alternative to cow’s milk and the calcium content is comparable to the dairy milk. The soy variety of plant based milk is significantly similar to the regular non vegan milk in terms of protein quality and quantity.

Reportedly, The Vegan Society has also requested NHS to look into the unfair advantage, vitamin D supplements put vegans under, since they are made from animal fat. Vegan parents and guardians currently have to purchase vegan friendly supplement drops to meet their kid’s nutritional needs, as recommended by NHS.

The letter also requests NHS to give due regards to the needs of those following a plant based cruelty free lifestyle and avoid the unjust discrimination against vegans.
