by | March 15, 2019

The New Vegan, a restaurant located in Northwood serving all-vegan burgers, smoothies and deserts is open for business as of last week. Rahein Jones, first cousin of the late Corey Jones, and his wife, Patricia Achille-Jones are the proud owners of this business and there is no holding them back.

Back in 2013 with the help of Corey and his brother CJ, Rahein was able to begin building what would be the first rendition of “The New Vegan”. The new location which had just launched is able to hold an astonishing 150 diners whereas their older location was only able to accommodate under two dozen. Drawing inspiration from when the couple first went vegan and the challenges they faced when trying to create yummy yet easy dishes for not only themselves but their young child, the family was able to create a menu to suit just that. To make things even better, the kitchen in the restaurant isn’t only vegan, but it is also absent of gluten, dairy, and soy.

In an interview with The Palm Beach Post, Rahein said that “Corey took care of [the music] for us, We have not filled those shoes since he passed.” Corey Jones was the victim of police violence in Palm Beach, Florida back in 2015. He was shot multiple times and killed by a plainclothes police officer doing burglary surveillance while he, Jones, was waiting by his broken-down car. In June of 2016, Nouman K. Raja was charged and on March7, 2019, after four long years, Corey Jones and his family finally received justice. Raja was officially convicted of manslaughter and attempted murder.

This past Friday, the new restaurant hosted a grand opening celebration for their new and improved location, where a painting proudly pays tribute to their late cousin. The event was just what was needed to kick-off their restaurant, with free food sampling, a speech from city officials, as well as a free salsa class. You can stay updated with The New Vegan via their website which hosts their current menu and upcoming events or through their Instagram page.
