Indonesian Government Pledge To Stop People Eating Dog and Cats

In Some Countries, People Eating Dog & Cats Meat Is Considered Completely Normal.

The dog and cat meat trade, which is abhorred by a lot of people in the west, and are unable to see the irony that eating a dog’s meat is no different than eating a pig – may actually be a thing of the past in Indonesia. The government has pledged to ban the horrific trade, announcing their plans at the National Coordination of Animal Welfare meeting in Jakarta.

The effort which had support from a number of well-known film and television personalities and ending with a petition consisting of nearly a million people asking the president, Joko Widodo “end the brutal slaughter of millions of dogs and cats for the meat trade.”

After meeting earlier this month with the Veterinary Medical Association, animal agencies and the government across Indonesia. It was revealed that certifications of health will no longer be available for people who want to serve or eating dog or cats in the future.

The decision was due to reports of illnesses of people eating dog across markets in Indonesia. The DMFI, who previously issued a warning against eating the cats and dogs feels it puts the public at risk.

“The dog and cat meat trade are utterly brutal, a risk to human health and largely fueled by crime,” said Kitty Block, President of the Humane Society International, in a statement. “We applaud the Indonesian government for pledging to end the trade following our DMFI investigations.”

She continued, “We hope that this bold step will send a strong message to other countries across Asia, such as China, South Korea, India, and Vietnam where 30 million dogs and 10 million cats suffer unimaginable cruelty for the meat trade, many of them stolen pets. We stand ready to work with the Indonesian authorities to implement a robust ban, end the slaughter, and bring us one step closer to shutting down these dreadful trades for good.”
