Kylie Jenner’s vegan skincare line lands in controversy. Is it even justified?

Last week, the news about rather ‘presumed’ traces of animal-based ingredients in Kylie Skin took to social media to question the authenticity of the skincare range’s claim of being fully vegan.

As it turns out, a misspelled Google search lead to this entire debacle where Kylie Jenner was accused of lying about her vegan skincare line. It all started with few eagle-eyed customers Googling suspected ingredients used in ‘Vanilla Milk’ and other products from Kylie Skin. The suspected ingredients can potentially be animal-derived in fact, kindling the suspicion further.

But turns out, that the ingredients in question were nothing but mis-Googled information, the accuser without paying much attention to the ‘e’ and ‘a’ in the spelling which determines the source of the chemical compounds.

‘A’ and ‘E’ can mean a lot!

The first accusation was hurled from one Twitter user who claimed two of Kylie Skin products, namely- Vanilla Milk Toner and Foaming Face Wash have animal-based ingredients in them. Her tweet pointed out the use of ‘Hydroxyacetophenone.’ She even attached screenshots of the ingredients listed on a Google search page and a brief about the same where it could be seen stated “from the castor sacs of the mature beaver.”

The First Accusation Based On Mis-Googled Search

However, the Twitter user apparently didn’t mind to cross-check the ingredient and instead resorted to her Google search that in fact was actually showing a different ingredient altogether, with similar spelling, but not same. What she got in her research was ‘3-Hydroxyacetophenone’ that is actually the beaver-derived version of ‘‘Hydroxyacetophenone,’ which is in fact, lab-synthesized. After another user pointed out the error in accuracy, she apologized.

This isn’t the only accusation Kylie Cosmetic received. Other accusations were similarly based on subtle spellings that folks couldn’t catch and based their assumptions off of. ‘Glycerine,’ for instance was another suspected ingredient that is animal-derived, that people thought was used in Kylie Skin products, according to multiple reports.

In fact, it turns out, here again, ‘glycerin’ is used, which to say, is plant-based. Very similarly, ‘squalene’ was another suspected ingredients that are actually derived from sharks. But the one used in Kylie Skin is ‘squalane’ which is the similarly-effective plant-based alternative.

Kylie Skin is the youngest billionaire Jenner’s standalone venture into vegan skincare, and her range promotes that all the products are cruelty-free, free from sulfate and paraben. Kylie Skin products launched in May and since then have sold out twice, the Daily Mail reports. What do you think? Let me know your thoughts in comments.
