Meet TUNO, the Canned Seafood Alternative with a Catchy Name
There’s a new lean, green, plant-based protein in the market, it’s not fake-meat or pretend-poultry. It’s Tuno, a plant-based ocean-safe canned seafood alternative, with an extremely catchy name. Atlantic Natural Foods, the leading shelf-stable manufacturer and provider of Loma Linda®, Neat® and Kaffree Roma™ brand products announced last month that TUNO™, a new plant-based, canned seafood alternative, is ready to hit the shelves.

Made with non-GMO plant-based protein ingredients, this protein-rich, gluten-free food features the light, flaky texture of seafood and is packed with nutritious omega 3s, and is completely fish-free and ocean-safe. Tuno was created help combat the growing crisis of overfishing and fish stocks being depleted around the globe.
ANF founder and chairman, J. Douglas Hines says that he recognizes that seafood is not an endless resource and that there is a need for long-term seafood alternative protein. Atlantic Natural Foods makes Tuno so by combining soy, yeast, and sunflower oil. Each serving has roughly 80 percent of the omega-3s of tuna, and half as much protein.
Hines claims that the company is hoping to appeal to the health-conscious consumer who’s looking for a healthier, more environmentally sustainable and less expensive protein option. Tuno comes in three flavor varieties: the original, in spring water, lemon pepper, and Spicy Tuno with sriracha. While the product comes in a 5-ounce tin with an easy-open pop top, the company will also be debuting pouches soon.
If you’re wondering how Tuno tastes but are a little sketched out at the thoughts of fishy flavored soy flour, the folks over at Men’s Health Magazine have done us all a solid and performed their own taste test. The reviews aren’t great, they even likened the appearance of Tuno to dog food, and describing the texture as “more chewy than flaky” and that the “flavor came mostly from the sauces”.
