My Unplanned Pregnancy – The Second Trimester

by | December 30, 2017

My bump was starting to show but since it was winter I did surprise a few people when I ‘suddenly’ showed a big pregnant belly.

Over the course of the second trimester of my unplanned pregnancy most people we know found out that we were expecting a baby soon. Either from us or through the grapevine. I started to really embrace the whole experience as it became more and more real. We went for scans and appointments with our midwife and stocked up on baby necessities.

At twenty weeks along, while my partner was overseas for a few weeks, I felt the first little ‘kick’ against my hand as I settled into bed for the night. My heart leapt and I was overcome with joy. I never expected to feel so much for the little jellybean inside me! As the weeks went by, there were more kicks, hiccups, and somersaults and my favourite thing to do was rest my hands on my belly and feel our little one bump against them. My second favourite thing to do was make other people feel it!

Along with the joys of feeling our baby move and the excitement of our impending parenthood came the hormones. I was still very lucky to be spared the horrors of morning sickness but my moods were totally unpredictable! I would spend entire days crying about absolutely anything and everything and others snapping at whoever was unlucky enough to say the wrong thing to me. For the most part though, I was feeling pretty good and had little to complain about.

Because we hadn’t been planning to have a baby, we really had some research to do over these few months before our little surprise came into the world. Google became a close friend. I stalked the forums of every pregnancy website I could find for the answers to the questions we came up with. We became regulars at our local baby store. We purchased way more items than we could truly afford or ever thought we would need. Lists of items were made comparing the safety features of some products so we could be sure we had the best. Aside from eating my weight in peanut butter and taking multiple naps, researching everything baby was all I did for weeks of my second trimester.

As my belly grew, I really settled into being pregnant. I felt extremely comfortable and in my element. Sometimes I felt as though I had been pregnant for most of my life. I would happily spend longer in the second trimester, if only I could have a glass of wine now and then! Parenthood seemed a comfortable distance away. While my body had changed quite a lot, I was still wearing my normal clothing and doing most of my usual work and activities.

Then suddenly, the third trimester was upon us….

Kate Timmins I’m a first time mama living in beautiful Adelaide, South Australia. When I’m not at home enjoying the company of my partner, our gorgeous baby boy, and our five rescue cats I love to spend my time walking along our local beaches and trying new foods from the growing number of vegan eateries in our city. I’m proud to be a foster carer for my local animal rescue; I believe that saving one animal may not change the world, but it will change the world for that animal!
