Patient in Vegetative State Gives Birth at Arizona Healthcare Facility

Police in Phoenix, Arizona are investigating sexual abuse at a nursing facility after a female patient, who has been in a vegetative state for over a decade gave birth on December 29th. The patient has been at Hacienda Healthcare facility since a near drowning incident left her in that condition over ten years ago.

Reports say that staff at the facility did not know the patient was pregnant until she went into labor. With the help of one of the facility’s nurses, the patient gave birth to a healthy baby boy on December 29th.

A spokesperson for the Phoenix police told the Washington Post that the department is investigating. The police department has not yet released any details about the case. Sexually assaulting a vulnerable adult is a felony in Arizona. No arrests have been made yet in connection with the incident at the facility.

In an interview with Phoenix independent news station KTVK, Karina Cesena, a mother of a patient at the facility, said that trust had been broken. While she doesn’t know if her daughter has been victimized, she’s sleeping in her room at night until the perpetrator has been arrested. Cesena’s daughter has a traumatic brain injury and is unable to walk or talk, but she does understand.

Upon learning of the allegations, the Arizona Department of Economic Security immediately dispatched a team to conduct a health and safety check on all patients who reside at the Hacienda Healthcare facility.

Hacienda Healthcare spokeswoman Nancy Salmon has said in a statement, that due to Federal and State privacy laws the facility cannot comment on any patient or ongoing investigations. Salmon also said that they were cooperating with authorities.

This is not the first time the healthcare facility has been under investigation for the mistreatment of patients. In 2013, an investigation found that a facility staff member made inappropriate and sexual comments about four patients. Witnesses to the alleged incidents failed to report them until a month later. The state found that the facility failed to ensure that clients were treated with dignity. The staff member was terminated.

On Monday, Hacienda’s board of directors unanimously accepted the resignation of CEO Bill Timmons.
