by | January 9, 2019

After a vegan crowd-pleasing start to the new year, Pizza Hut has found themselves having to apologize for serving dairy ice cream to a vegan customer. Kori Paul Swabey, a 23-year-old from Plymouth, England popped into a local Pizza Hut to try some of their vegan options.

Swabey, the relatively new vegan was thrilled with his jackfruit pizza but said he was outraged upon learning that he’d been served dairy ice cream. After enjoying the pizza chain’s new vegan offering, Swabey asked his server if they had any vegan dessert options. He said he was assured that the ice cream bar and all of the toppings were completely free of animal products.

Swabey said he discovered that his sweet treat wasn’t in fact vegan when he checked the topping bottle labels, which clearly stated that they contained milk. Unfortunately, he had already eaten his ice cream.

In an interview with the Plymouth Herald newspaper, Swabey said that he was ‘heartbroken’ and that he ‘feels like his lifestyle has been mocked.’

A spokesperson for Pizza Hut has since apologized on behalf of the company, saying that the mistake was human error and they regret serving dairy ice cream to a vegan customer. They are said to be taking appropriate measures at that particular restaurant to ensure this never happens again.

At the beginning of the new year, in celebration of Veganuary, Pizza Hut delighted vegans in the UK with the release of their vegan jackfruit pizza, the Jack ‘n’ Ch**se, claiming that if there are enough sold, over ten thousand, in fact, the plant-based pie will become a permanent fixture on the menu. The pizza giant took to Instagram, telling customers to post pictures of their jackfruit pizza with the hashtag #iwantyoujack and follow Pizza Hut UK so they could be entered into a competition to win a one hundred pound gift card.
