Vegan Birkenstocks: Why They’re Awesome

by | January 12, 2019

When I’m not wearing my Dr. Martens, you can almost always find me in my Vegan Arizona Birkenstocks. Birkenstock is a German footwear brand founded in 1774, which made its way to the U.S. about fifty years ago. As creators of the “footbed” and specializing in quality over fashion, Birkenstock has become infamous for both their comfort and look. Despite winning the 2016 Vegan Fashion Award, many including myself dubbed Birkenstocks as those “ugly old man shoes.” I quickly had a change of heart as soon as I got a pair.

After working on my feet for eight hours a day in a surf shop, I shortly realized that I needed comfortable shoes that would not only fit the vibe of my workplace but which would provide my feet the comfort and support which they’ve been craving. Saying goodbye to my worn-down Converse, I called every shoe retailer in my mall until I found the one place which sold vegan Birkenstocks, Robert Wayne. After about two weeks of breaking in the shoes, I finally had what would become a staple in my fashion choices.

The vegan Birkenstocks are manufactured with Birko-Flor instead of leather. What is Birko-Flor? It is the brand’s cruelty-free alternative which provides the same results as the original shoes. As stated on Birkenstock’s website, Birko-Flor is “made of easy-to-care-for and hygienic PVC, which has been lined on the inside with a soft, breathable layer of fleece. This high-quality material is very gentle on the skin, and it’s comfortable while also being very durable.”

The insoles are made from EVA lined with microfiber, a naturally vegan material that is soft-to-the-touch and has the ability to retain shape. This means that the shoes will form to your feet over time.

Like my vegan Dr. Martens, Birkenstocks are versatile which is one of the most important factors that I consider before buying any product. In California’s sunny weather, I can wear them with casual jeans and a tee and call it a day. In France’s winter, I’ll pair them with a cute pair of patterned socks (and thanks to Christmas, I have many new socks to debut)

Thus far, these shoes have served me well and if you are in the market for a new, durable sandal which doesn’t use animal products, Birkenstocks are a great option. Although the vegan pairs have had many sizes sold out on their website for quite a while, you can always call major shoe stores to see if they have any available.

What is your favorite vegan sandal? Let me know in the comments below.
