So You Do Know A Vegan Diet Isn’t Healthy Right?
How many times have you heard people comment ‘you know a vegan diet isn’t healthy, right?’
This is one question/statement that really bugs me when people say it to me. I’m not going to deny the fact that a vegan diet can be unhealthy if it’s not done properly. However, so can every diet. There was a period of time when I turned vegan that I literally ate french fries for nearly every meal. I couldn’t think of anything else to make. So yeah, my transition showed my family that a vegan diet isn’t healthy when it’s not done right. There are omnis out there who will live on chicken nuggets and hamburgers. Yet they don’t get half the bad rep that vegans get. All healthy diets are about finding the right balance.
The only time most people hear about a vegan diet is when it’s at extremes, and people are putting their health at risk. Childhood obesity and diabetes cases are on the rise worldwide. Yet these topics don’t get as much coverage as the extremes of the vegan diet. A study from the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health in the States found that between the ages of 10-17 31.2% of youth this age range are classed as overweight or obese.
In regards to childhood diabetes, until about 10 years ago, type 2 diabetes accounted for less than 3% of all cases of new-onset diabetes in children. Now, however, that number has jumped to about 45% and that’s mostly down to their diet. And with the majority of the US having a standard diet including animal products, can it really be said that a vegan diet isn’t healthy?
It’s so much easier than most people realize to get all the nutrients you need from a well balanced vegan diet. Yes, that does include protein and calcium! It has the added benefit of preventing animal cruelty and mistreatment. It’s also linked to a lower risk of heart disease, lower blood sugar levels, reduces blood pressure, lower risk of type 2 diabetes, preventing osteoporosis. There are so many health benefits with proper studies behind them that are making it easier to help more people adopt this lifestyle. And that’s a good thing. Still think a vegan diet isn’t healthy?
With the growing popularity of the vegan diet and how many more people are adopting little things like ‘Meatless Mondays’ and more places offering vegetarian and vegan options, it’s a huge step forward.
So the next time someone says ‘you know a vegan diet isn’t healthy right?’ you can turn around and give them the facts.
All it takes is one person to start something big and change the world.
