UK Chain Greggs To Veganize Menu Favorites
UK grab-and-go giant Greggs has announced that it is developing vegan versions of its bestselling products.
Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside told reporters last month about plans for a vegan donut, and has since revealed that the brand’s developers are working on everything from vegan pasties to steak bakes.
“We are working away to see if we can come up with a vegan version of all our top selling lines because obviously people want a vegan option,” he told LBC.
“And if we can succeed in doing that, and do something that tastes just as good as the meat version, then that will sell very successfully. That’s what’s been shown with the vegan sausage roll.”
Greggs’ Growing Success
After the success of its vegan Quorn sausage roll, which launched earlier this year, Greggs had to go back to City investors several times and explain that it was making more money than expected. A credit line increase helped the giant brand keep up with the intense, underestimated demand.
Profits have jumped more than 50 percent in the first six months of 2019, and shareholders received almost $43M in dividends in July after sales increased by 10.5 percent at established locations.
Its recent additions of coffees, soups, and wraps as well as its extended business hours have also helped to give the chain a competitive edge.
