Gucci Badly Fumbles, Withdraws Offensive Jumper After Backlash
Gucci, the Italian luxury fashion brand, embarrassed itself badly after coming up with a ‘balaclava’ polo neck jumper that features a cut-out mouth with big red lips. With Black History month already going on, Gucci displayed their insensitivity terribly with the offensive jumper.
Since the release of the racist polo neck jumper, Gucci received widespread backlash on various social media platforms. The $890 wool jumper is a part of the winter collection and depicts a model wearing the black turtleneck that covers half of her face, except the mouth-peeking hole cut-out, lined by a thick red ring that resembles lips.
Understandably, the racist sweater sparked outrage among people, with several of them taking it to Twitter to express their anguish. One Twitter user wrote:
“Balaclava knit top by Gucci. Happy Black History Month y’all”
Another expressed concerns over Gucci’s insensitivity and rightly so.
“#Gucci was right on time for black history month with the foolishness huh..”
Gucci Apologizes After The Backlash, Withdraws Offensive Jumper
After seeing the backlash, Gucci apologized for the hurt caused by their racist wool jumper. The Italian brand posted a statement saying:
“Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make. Full statement below”.Gucci via Twitter
The offensive jumper has been withdrawn since from all online sites.
We hope taking a cue from this incident, global brands that have followers all over the world, would invest more time and energy in employing a culturally diverse force.
