Democrats Cory Booker And Tulsi Gabbard Hit Iowa State Fair’s Veg Booth

Cory Booker and Tulsi Gabbard, Democratic candidates, visited a small vegetarian and vegan booth at the Iowa State Fair as part of their campaign trail.

Veggie Tales, a family run business co-owned by Brian McCoy, is one of the few booths at the Iowa State Fair that does not serve meat. Booker, a vegan, and Gabbard, a vegetarian, visited the booth a day apart. Both ordered the Golden Fried, a deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a stick. Some of Gabbard’s team also ordered fried vegetarian corndogs. Booker called the sandwich “a little slice of heaven,” and ordered a second.

The fair runs from August 8 to 13.

A Meat Producing State

Iowa is known as one of the largest producers of pig meat in the US. In 2017, the pork industry in Iowa was valued at $2.2 billion. Pork was only beaten out by soybeans for agricultural feed, which was the top product produced in Iowa in 2017, valued at $2.7 billion. 

This is reflected in the event lineup of the state fair, which centres heavily around animal agriculture activities, include sheep shearing and dairy cow milking contests.
