“The Game Changers” Team Helps Expose Beef Industry Ties To Meat Research
The team behind the best-selling vegan documentary The Game Changers has been working with The Washington Post to expose alleged misinformation from the beef industry.
The research group NutriRECS looked into the risks of eating red and processed meat. The results of the NutriRECS study shocked the nutrition world as they suggested the health risks associated with red meat are not as serious as previously suggested.
It has since come to light that the group received funding from a program that is backed by the beef industry.
NutriTECS, which is led by Bradley C Johnston, an epidemiologist based out of Halifax, Nova scotia, summarized “that warnings linking meat consumption to heart disease and cancer are not backed by good scientific evidence” and that there was no need for people to decrease their consumption of meat.
Controversial Results From NutriTECS
It is now known that the research group are working in partnership with Texas A&M University — an institution that receives funding from the beef industry. This fact was not disclosed at any point by the group and has cast doubt by some over their findings.
The Agricultural and Life Sciences program at Texas A&M University includes several meat industry related courses, such as educational workshops on promoting beef to consumers and raising cattle.
Johnston has so far not responded to questions about the research groups financial connections to the beef industry, but has said “I hope you can focus on the bigger picture, including the science and what the public should know about red and processed meat, so that they can make their own decisions.”
The Washington Post article highlighted that Johnston had also failed to disclose a similar conflict of interest when heading a 2016 study to debunk the health risks associated with sugar. The study had been financed by the International Life Sciences Institute, which has received funding from both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.
