Truck Driver Fined $776 After Hitting Animal Rights Activist

by | September 9, 2019

A truck driver whose identity has not been made public has been fined $776 CAD after hitting an animal activist at an animal rights demonstration in Alberta this month.

The incident, which occurred at an event organized by nonprofit organization Animal Save in Red Deer, resulted in a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian.

The victim, Kattrina Horner, was attending a vigil for slaughtered animals at the Olymel Cornwall bacon packing plant and slaughterhouse in Red Deer with four other activists. She was crossing the crosswalk during a pedestrian light, when the semi truck began to turn.

According to the video evidence, the truck driver honked at Horner but did not slow before ploughing into her. After the collision, the truck driver can be seen smiling and giving a thumbs up to the camera.

Aftermath For The Activist

Horner says that she is now dealing with a multitude of injuries, including rotator cuff damage, muscle and soft tissue damage, and lower back pain. She has continued to hold vigils at the slaughterhouse, but has turned activist families and individuals away that want to join her, due to fears of aggressive truck drivers.

According to CTV News, Horner has acquired a legal team and is looking into legal action she can take after the incident. She says that she is thankful she wasn’t hurt worse.
