UK Hospitals Consider Bacon Ban
Hospitals in the UK could soon be taking steps to ban bacon in meals served to patients.
The topic was brought to the table by Plant-Based Health Professionals, a coalition of doctors asking hospitals in the UK to stop serving it and other highly processed meat.
One of the group’s members, Dr Shireen Kassam discussed the recommendation with The Sun, asking “why serve food that can cause life-threatening conditions?”
“Hospitals will argue healthier options are available, but there’s no safe limit with processed meat,” she added.
The recommendations are part of a campaign dubbed Give Bacon The Boot, which clearly presents information intended to inspire hospitals to ditch processed meat from their menus — using the health risks inherent with such foods as motivation.
“Bacon is in the same category as asbestos as far as its potential to cause cancer,” Anaesthetist Dr Charlotte Houltram told The Mirror.
Bacon, Processed Meats & Cancer Risk
Cancer of the colon is the fourth most common cancer in the UK — a cancer which sausage and bacon directly increase the risk of.
The regular consumption of processed meat has also been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer by as much as 9 percent.
The Global Burden of Disease Project estimates that around 34,000 cancer deaths a year are caused by diets high in processed meat.
