Undercover Video Reveals Animal Cruelty At Illegal Australian Abattoir
An anonymous Australian undercover activist has obtained graphic footage from an illegal abattoir operating in Koo Wee Rup, Victoria.
The footage shows slaughterhouse workers kicking sheep that are about to be killed, and sheep writhing around after having their throats slit whilst fully conscious. Australian law requires animals be stunned prior to slaughter.
In addition to the animal cruelty pictures, the video contains multiple biosecurity breaches. At one point, a cat and a peacock can be seen walking around where sheep are being slaughtered.
Workers are also seen violating food safety regulations by slaughtering animals in plain clothes, before loading meat into the boot of a car.
The video was provided to Victorian Animal Justice Party MP, Andy Meddick, who filed a complaint with Agriculture Victoria.
Mr Meddick has since posted the video to his Facebook page.
Crackdown On Undercover Activists
The footage has been released at a time when the Australian government is planning on cracking down on animal agriculture whistleblowers.
Both the New South Wales government, and the Australian government have proposed tough new fines, and jail time, for animal rights activists who enter farms illegally.
Dominion director and Aussie Farms executive director, Chris Delforce contends that footage depicting this sort of animal cruelty is exactly why “activists are needed.”
