Can Dogs Be Vegan? Or Going Too Far?

Can dogs be vegan?

This is a question that has a lot of people thinking. Dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they can digest animal products as well as plant products. I am not a veterinarian, but I am a dog lover and have done my research on this topic. There are several brands that offer vegan kibble for dogs available in the United States, and you can even make your own dog food.
Feeding our dogs a vegan diet is something small we can do to contribute less to animal cruelty, and in most cases is the healthier choice for them. If you have ever looked into what most commercial dog food has in it, I am sure you would never want to give it to your dog again.
Make sure they are getting the right nutrients and talk to your vet about a vegan diet, but here are some products you might want to try!
1. V-Dog Kibble
My dogs absolutely love V-dog! Among all of the brands we have tried, this is their favorite. They have mini bites which are better for smaller dogs and the regular size kibble for medium to large sized dogs. Both are great products. V-Dog kibble is a little pricier than other brands, but if you don’t have the time to make your own home-made food, this is definitely worth it.
2. V-Dog Breath Bones
My rescue pup loves these treats and they give her great breath. V-dog has minis for pups and small dogs, peanut butter flavored and regular. My dogs like both flavors, but my younger rescue dog absolutely loves the peanut butter breath bones above all else.
3. Old Mother Hubbard Crunchy Classic Natural Dog Treats ~ Just Vegg’n
These are vegan dog biscuits made in Canada. Not all of this company’s products are vegan, but I am a firm believer in increasing the demand of vegan products from all companies. This will make sure they get the message that there are more of us vegans and that the market is profitable. These are great little biscuits to give as a treat, or a way to lure your dogs to come back inside after running out the door between your legs.
4. Sam’s Yams Veggie Rawhide
Anyone, vegan or not, who has seen how they make raw hide would most likely be horrified and swear it off for good. These are a great replacement and give the pups! It’s something to keep them busy for a while when they are riled up.
5. Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula
This is another version of vegan kibble that I have heard a lot of success stories with! A lot of pet owners have switched to this vegetarian/vegan formula after their pets becoming ill. When switching to Natural balance it is recommended to switch out half of their old dog food with half of the new kibble. Doing this will help them transition.
6. Dog Greens
For anyone interested in making their own dog food, knowing how your dog food is made and making their own. I do try to whenever I have the time. This is a great way to make sure they are getting enough of the vitamins and minerals that they need!
