Ruby Rose Will Play The First Vegan Superhero In Batwoman

by | August 15, 2019

Vegan star and member of the LGBTQ+ community Ruby Rose will play the first popular vegan superhero in her role in CW’s upcoming show Batwoman.

According to the show’s executives, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries, many aspects of Rose — who identifies as vegan, lesbian, and gender fluid — will be conveyed in her role as Kate Kane, her veganism and sexual orientation inclusive.

“Representation is everything and diversity is our strength,” Sarah said in a Comic Con panel interview.

“We love this character and we love her sexuality and we love her beyond her sexuality … We’re really proud of being able to have an out lesbian woman front and center of these shows.”

LGBTQ+ Representation Before and Beyond Batwoman

Another CW show to feature an LGBTQ superhero was Supergirl.

“We want to tell on our show the whole spectrum of humanity, and that everyone can be a hero,” says co-showrunner, Jessica Queller.

“This is a perfect time and a beautiful opportunity to represent this population,” she added, of trans-identifying character, Nia Nal, played by transgender actress and activist, Nicole Maines.

Representation of strong female leads as diverse, gay and lesbian women on TV (and in movies) has been a topic of debate and controversy dating back to the 1980s with the woman-centric buddy-cop show, Cagney and Lacey.

Back in 2006, when DC Comics executive Dan Didio was asked by Wizard Entertainment why he was excited about Batwoman, he shared how choices were made surrounding the “strong female character,” and her sexual orientation.

“It was from conversations we’ve had for expanding the DC Universe, for looking at levels of diversity,” he said.

“We wanted to have a cast that is much more reflective of today’s society and even today’s fanbase.”

12 years later, in 2018, LGBTQ+advocacy organization GLAAD released its “Where We Are on TV” report which found an astounding one in 11 characters identifying openly.
