Family Friendly Winter Getaways in California
California, also known as the Golden State, is one of the most popular vacation destinations for both Americans and foreigners alike. With notable cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and San Diego being the best for the warmer months, it can be difficult to decide where to go on a family trip in the winter. Although you can find ice skating rinks in many major cities, sometimes you may want to go somewhere else for a more “authentic” winter experience. As a native Californian, I’m here to share with you the best

Lake Tahoe
Situated in Northern California and Nevada split between the border, Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular destinations for a snowy getaway. A popular summer spot as well, Tahoe frames itself to cater to families, couples, and solo travelers. Its close proximity to both Sacramento and Reno make this place easy to travel to and from. Tahoe offers a wide range of family-friendly activities such as Alpine adventures and snow tubing, and you can get any information you need from tickets to events from their website.
Mount Shasta
North of Redding and near the California-Oregon border, Mount Shasta is found in Siskiyou County. In the summer, this destination is great for hiking but during the colder months, think about visiting the Mount Shasta ski park. January is “Learn to Ski” month, which allows first-timers and beginners to take on this new skill. Mountain of Fun is designed for the ultimate kid and birthday party experience. Depending on the duration of your stay in Mount Shasta, you can also plan a day trip to Redwood National Park to see some of the most beautiful trees in the state.
Running Springs
If you want to change up your routine of going to Big Bear for some snow time activities, think about visiting Running Springs. Located in the San Bernardino mountains, you can find Snow Valley which is a great ski spot that gets the most natural snow in all of Southern California. If you have little ones, definitely try family sledding here.
