Alicia Silverstone Asks Fans For Help In Stopping Animal Cruelty
Vegan actor Alicia Silverstone has reached out to her fans to help prevent cruelty to farm animals amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a video posted to Instagram, Silverstone asks her followers to sign a Mercy For Animals petition. The animal welfare organization is urging the government not to bail out the meat industry, as farmers across the US are culling animals.
“As you may have read in the news, slaughterhouses around the country have become COVID-19 hot spots” said Silverstone in the video.
“Workers stand shoulder to shoulder all day slaughtering animals, which has caused the virus to quickly spread in these facilities, causing many employees to become sick.”
“Killing Millions Of Animals”
“Because there are worker shortages, some major meat companies are now killing millions of animals on farms and in horrific ways, like covering them with a foam that causes them to suffocate to death.”
“At the same time, these meat companies are asking the federal government for a bailout. To use your taxpayer dollars to prop up this cruel and broken system.”
“Join me and Mercy For Animals in telling the USDA this is unacceptable, and that we need to use taxpayer dollars to transition away from this cruel system.”

The plant-based mom-of-one went vegan for the animals at the age of 21, although she had first delved into a vegetarian lifestyle at the age of eight.
“When I was 8 years old, my brother was making the noises of the animals I was eating, so I decided to go vegetarian” Silverstone said.
“Then I would give up because I was 8.”
Talking on her decision to embrace veganism, the actor said, “I just took a look at my dog and said, ‘If I’m not willing to eat you, how can I continue to eat these other creatures that have the same desire to live, are just as funny, just as cute as my dogs.”
