Coalition Of Lawmakers Slam Taxpayer-Funded “Wasteful” Animal Experiments

by | August 12, 2020

A bipartisan group of 31 members of congress and seven army veterans have slammed the use of animals in “wasteful” government experiments.

The coalition — which is led by Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Army veteran Brian Mast (R-FL) — argues that “painful and outdated” experiments are being conducted on cats at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

A recent exposé by the White Coat Waste Project (WCWP) uncovered that the VA has been carrying out the deadly experiments, which have so far cost the taxpayer over $8 million.

The coalition of lawmakers and veterans has now sent a letter to VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to demand an explanation.

“Questionable VA Experiments”

In the letter — which was shared with Raise Vegan by email — the group states, “we are disturbed to learn that questionable VA experiments on cats have continued at facilities in Cleveland, Louisville, and Los Angeles at great expense to taxpayers.”

“We are concerned that the VA’s use of cats for invasive and terminal taxpayer-funded research may not be warranted.”

The exposé by the WCWP revealed how invasive surgeries are being performed on healthy cats, often to insert electrodes that remotely stimulate the bladder or the colon.

In an email to Raise Vegan, Justin Goodman, Vice President of Advocacy and Public Policy at WCWP said, “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay millions for VA bureaucrats to buy healthy kittens, cripple them, drill into their skulls and even videotape their abuse in outdated and barbaric constipation tests and other cat experiments.”

“Taxpayer-Funded Kitten Catastrophe”

“We applaud Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV), Brian Mast (R-FL) and their colleagues on both sides of the aisle for their outstanding leadership to cut these wasteful cat experiments.”

“This taxpayer-funded kitten catastrophe should be relegated to the litterbox right now.”
