“How can I have an intelligent baby?” is a common question that runs through the minds of many moms-to-be. Promoting brain function while your baby is still in the womb is a great way to ensure that your child will already have begun to be mentally stimulated before they come out into the world, in turn, possibly making them smarter. Here are three ways that you can help your baby to have a healthy brain while still in the womb.

In a study from the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, there was a clear correlation between activity during pregnancy and heightened language skills in children (the study focused on children at age five). This is due to the fact that moms-to-be that were physically active during their pregnancy, versus moms-to-be that weren’t, dispersed moderate cortisol levels which help a baby’s brain develop. It is advised for women who are pregnant to engage in light to moderate exercise for half an hour each day, whether it be a nice walk or a powerful yoga session.

Talk to Your Bump For a Smart Baby

Beginning at 20 weeks old, your unborn baby is able to hear and five weeks after, their auditory system is all set for the real world. Talk to your baby whenever you get the chance. If you have already decided on a baby name, begin to call them by their name. You can also read stories, sing lullabies and play your favorite tunes to your bump to expose them to sounds.

Eat a Well-Rounded Diet

You don’t want to miss out on vital nutrients, especially while pregnant. Omega-3s are one of the most essential vitamins that pregnant women need as it is crucial for the cranial development of your baby. This vitamin isn’t just found in fish! You can source it from walnuts, seeds, leafy greens and beans. You also want to be mindful of your iron intake: eat foods rich in the nutrient and consider using a cast iron skillet. Work with a medical professional to find the right diet plan for you.
