Headaches During Pregnancy: Causes and Remedies

Have you suffered from headaches during pregnancy?

Running to the bathroom every few minutes, losing sight of your feet, and having to pack away your favorite clothing items, all seem minute in comparison to terrible pregnancy headaches. You don’t have to suffer through these, and you don’t have to resort to medications if they do not align with your beliefs as a vegan parent.

The causes of headaches during pregnancy can be linked to a plethora of factors, and other than genetics there is no precise underlying cause. Hormone fluctuation, caffeine withdrawals, changes in blood sugar levels, along with increased blood volume and circulation can all trigger existing sensitivities, thus resulting in a headache or a migraine.

If you have experienced headaches or migraines prior to becoming pregnant, the likelihood of experiencing prenatal headaches is exponentially higher. Pay close attention to your body. If you are faced with headaches during pregnancy, then it is not “normal” and needs to be looked into. A headache is a sign that something is off within your body, and while it may feel like a wild goose chase finding the cause, the quest will help you and your baby in the long run.

After having blood work and testing done with your medical provider, it is important to discuss the right treatment options. Although you may not want to use pharmaceuticals to help with your headache, it may be the only thing that works for your body. Whatever choice you end up making is the right one for you, and it is important that you have a provider that agrees with your decisions.

When going the natural route for relief, you do have many options to try out. For caffeine withdrawals, drinking herbal tea can help fight dehydration and soothe symptoms. Getting light exercise every day, especially in an activity such as prenatal yoga, can improve circulation studies and muscle fatigue. Eating small meals throughout the day is imperative for maintaining a steady blood sugar level, preventing spikes and drops that are known to cause headaches. Other important remedies for suffering from headaches during pregnancy include cold compresses, staying hydrated, lying in a dark and silent room, getting as much extra rest as you can, and last but not least, sleeping it off.

It can be very hard to find over the counter medications, such as acetaminophen that does not include gelatin or animal products, and it is not generally recommended for pregnant women to take ibuprofen or aspirin. If you are going to take medications or supplements for your headaches, weigh out all of your options and their pro’s and cons with your healthcare provider.

Headaches have the ability to turn the beautiful journey of pregnancy into a miserable, painful time, but by listening to your body and treating yourself with the highest level of care, they are preventable and treatable. Do not succumb to the suffering, and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!
