Hell On Earth, Mother Endures C Section Birth Without Anesthetic
One mother had to endure a C section birth without anesthetic.
A woman and her fiance are suing Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, California after she says doctors performed an emergency cesarean section on her without anesthesia.
Anyone who has experienced an unplanned c-section can attest to it being stressful, and sometimes traumatic. Yet, one mom from Oceanside California, who recently had to have an unscheduled c section birth has unearthed a birthing nightmare.
In the lawsuit, it is alleged that medical staff was unable to locate the onsite anesthesiologist despite numerous attempts, and after 9 minutes, the doctor decided that performing unmedicated major abdominal surgery was the route to take.
Delfina Mota and her fiancé are suing Tri-City Medical Center, claiming medical malpractice and emotional distress from the procedure (No Kidding!).
According to court documents, Mota was 41 weeks pregnant when she checked into the hospital on November 15th, in order to be induced. She was in labor for the majority of the night, and in the small hours of the next morning, the entire birth took a turn that no one could have ever imagined. The frightening scene of when the fetal heartbeat couldn’t be detected by the doctor Sandra Lopez and Dr. Lopez called for an emergency c section birth, which would be standard practice.
Mota had been administered an epidural the night she checked in was then wheeled to the operating room and the anesthesiologist was called multiple times and couldn’t be located. It was at this point, that the epidural had “no effect on the surgical site for the C-section, which was located on her abdomen,” according to the lawsuit.
What you are about to read is graphic, and not for the faint of heart.
At this point, the doctor, Lopez, who didn’t wait for the anesthesiologist to reach the operating room, ordered Mota to be strapped down to the bed by staff despite pleading and screams.
She then cut her abdomen. The doctor’s “Operative Report” is quoted in the complaint, and she stated that she made the incision without anesthesia and separated Mota’s abdomen muscles to reach her uterus before the anesthesiologist walked into the room.
“[Mota] was crying and screaming at the top of her lungs, that she could feel everything that was happening and was also pleading for help, and for Defendants to stop cutting her,” until she passed out, according to the complaint.
Motas’ partner who was being restrained in the hallway by staff while this was happening, could her hear screaming in agony. He recalled to the Los Angeles Times, “I heard the screams, the horrific screams. That’s when I realized they were cutting her without anesthesia.”
Mota and Iheanachor shared with the L.A. Times that they’re now proud parents of a 7-month-old baby girl named Calli. Nonetheless, if the series of events did play out as the lawsuit alleges, the new mom has likely had to do a great deal of emotional healing, as well as physical.
A spokesperson for the medical center said in a statement: “Patient safety and quality are the utmost priorities for Tri-City Medical Center and all of our partners. Tri-City Healthcare District cannot comment further on pending litigation.”
