Joaquin Phoenix Pays Tribute To Regan Russel At Slaughterhouse Vigil
Russel was fatally hit by a truck when she attempted to give water to pigs as they were being transported into the facility.
Phoenix joined more than 100 people to attend a vigil in Russel’s honor in California earlier this week, organized by Los Angeles Animal Save.
“The Touch Of A Kind Hand”
“Regan Russell spent the final moments of her life providing comfort to pigs who had never experienced the touch of a kind hand,” said Phoenix.
“While her tragic death has brought upon deep sorrow in the Animal Save community, we will honor her memory by vigorously confronting the cruelties she fought so hard to prevent by marching with Black Lives, protecting Indigenous rights, fighting for LGBTQ equality, and living a compassionate vegan life,” he added.
“My heart goes out to the Toronto Animal Save community and to Regan’s lifelong partner, Mark Powell.”

An investigation into Russel’s death is currently underway, although no charges have been filed against anyone yet.
Russel’s partner Mark Powell has shared that one of the laws that the dedicated activist was fighting against was Bill 156 — the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act — which aims to make it illegal for anyone to enter private property where animals are killed for food.
“We Have To Fight”
“She died fighting for what she believed in,” Powell said, “whatever it cost, she would pay. Sometimes it’s money. Sometimes, it’s this.”
“My life ended on Friday, so for as long as I’m left here, we have to pick up the torch and we have to fight things like Bill 156.”
