Kat Von D Reveals Doctor Gave Her a ‘Sense of Fear’ and Now Has Midwife

by | September 28, 2018

Kat Von D, soon to be a new mama, recently discussed her decision to have a midwife at her birth with husband Leafer Sayer, on the Informed Podcast with Dr. Elliot Berlin.

The professional tattoo artist, and makeup creator spoke about seeing multiple doctors, leaving one office with “a million questions and a sense of doom and fear.”

She recalled the meetings were impersonal, and had to spend so much time on paperwork about her pregnancy.

Kat Von D said a friend urged her to consider a midwife after watching ‘The Business of Being Born’, a documentary,  by the talk show host, Ricky Lake, who after her own disappointing birth experience, recruited filmmaker Abby Epstein to explore the maternity care in North America. It leads the viewers on a discovery of what happens behind closed hospital doors, and follows the stories of couples who decide to take back their own births.

Kat Von D explained  “The minute we met Sarah, it was like, ‘Okay, let’s get excited now.’ It was so much fun … like, ‘This is really happening. This is how it’s supposed to feel.’

She also discussed the issues many women face, in how we expect it to be glowing, but turns out to be more difficult than expected.
“I think a lot of women want to be like … ‘I’m cool with stretch marks and my body changing,’” Kat Von D says. “To be honest, I thought I’d be a lot cooler with it, but I’m struggling with my weight gain. I know I’m healthy … but I was expecting to not be as affected by it … I’m self-conscious.”

The soon-to-be mom continues, “I don’t care what people think about me. When I look in the mirror, I wanna like what I see. I was working out six days a week prior to this pregnancy … and my body’s really soft now, and it’s okay, ’cause I like having big boobs and a big booty … I’m getting cellulite now.”
