I got a chance to connect with Matt Bennett and we got a bit chatty about the aspects of veganism, what motivated him, and his journey into the world of words.

Vegan Author Matt Bennett’s Journey Is Truly Inspirational
Talking about his life prior to embracing veganism, Matt feels although he intuitively knew that what we ate impacted our health, yet he was misled by the industry marketing gimmicks that dictate which foods are considered healthy. Throughout his early 20’s he continued to suffer from health issues, including weight gain, asthma, eczema, dry skin, allergies, congestion, constipation, and more.
So how did the breakthrough come?
Matt answers that it was until one day, at the age of 24, when he ‘listened to a radio program talking about drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices and how healthy it can be‘. He decided to give it a try and began to experience the energy and mental clarity that he hadn’t had for years.
It was at this point Matt realized the healing power of plants.
From there he continued to learn more about the benefits of eating a plant-based diet through documentaries, YouTube videos, and books. Matt explains,
“My health continued to improve over the next several months and I came across a documentary called Earthlings, which gave me a new ethical understanding of why a vegan diet was the right thing to do”.Vegan Author Matt Bennett
“I always had a love for animals but somehow didn’t comprehend that the animal products in my diet caused suffering. I had unconsciously put farm animals in a separate category than that of the animals I cared about”.Matt Bennett
Realizing farm animals deserve the same love as family pets
Matt soon realized that it is the normalcy associated with eating animal products that makes humans oblivious to the sufferings of farm animals. He grew up thinking that farm animals didn’t have the same capacity to think, feel, or love like our family dogs or cats could.
According to Matt, this normalcy makes it easy to eat animal products without ever understanding what they truly were. But this realization left him devasted, shocked, and angry at what he had been participating in. In his own words, he felt betrayed and couldn’t believe he had never been told this information before.
Understandably, he embraced veganism and cruelty-free lifestyle without having to look back ever. He shares the message through his YouTube channel aimed at promoting awareness about plant-based diets and veganism.
What was the inspiration behind writing a children’s book- ‘Vegan Adventures with Barnyard Friends’?
Talking about the motivation that led him to write the book, Matt says that children have a much higher level of intellectual capacity than they get credit for. We shouldn’t be hiding the truth from them about animal products. “I know for myself, I wish I would have been given the chance to decide if I wanted to eat animals or not. Especially when we now know the many health benefits of properly planned plant-based diets,” adds Matt.
This became one of the main reasons why he wanted to author a children’s book. The main motive is to give children that empathetic connection with farm animals.
What makes the book special?
On talking about the book that contains 15 pages of fun kid-friendly activities and 30 beautiful illustrations, Matt says: “Vegan Adventures with Barnyard Friends is a non-graphic, fun, and interactive way to teach kids about the animals that are commonly used for food and clothing”.
The book also contains simple plant-based recipes to encourage healthy eating for kids and their parents. Elaborating on the need to include recipes in the book, Matt explains: “In today’s world, our children are more overweight and chronically ill than ever before in history. The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has come out saying that a properly planned vegetarian or vegan diet is healthy and adequate for all stages of life. Parents should feel confident feeding themselves and their children whole-food, plant-based meals”.
What response did the book receive so far? Besides being a vegan author, what are his other interests?
Since being published in November 2017, Vegan Adventures with Barnyard Friends has reached children in 5 countries (USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Thailand, and Australia) and 21 U.S. states.
Matt also coaches people who are trying to become healthier by transitioning to whole-food, plant-based diets. He shares as much free information as he can through his social media accounts on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. He is passionate about helping and inspiring people to improve their health and lives.
