What Type Of Vegan Are You?

by | April 26, 2018

Whether you are just beginning your journey to veganism, or you have been vegan for decades, usually there is a specific turning point in your life which lead your down the plant based path. This doesn’t mean that you became vegan overnight necessarily, but maybe you watched a documentary, saw a youtube video or were inspired through a friend to go vegan for the animals, the planet and/or your health. I’m always interested to learn what inspired people to cut out animal products. So, what type of vegan are you?

When I first began cutting out dairy many years ago, I was doing so strictly for my health. I was having constant indigestion, along with terrible breakouts on my face. I had heard that cutting out dairy products would help with the issues, sure enough it did, which makes sense now because I am not a calf and all of those hormones were not meant for me. A couple of years later, I found myself shocked at slaughterhouse video footage, wondering how this was even legal and why was no one concerned about this?! Right after watching that footage, I was driving down the freeway and a slaughterhouse truck full of pigs went by me and I immediately became an ethical vegan.

Are You Vegan For…

The Animals- Arguably the top reason many people go plant based, this type of vegan is also known as an ethical vegan. Those who are vegan for the animals tend to be extremely compassionate for every living being. Often, they are the amazing people you see pouring water into the mouths of the pigs headed to slaughter. Also, they are usually the ones advocating for adopting animals from shelters, instead of purchasing from pet stores. Ethical vegans believe animals should not be held captive, so attractions such as Zoos and Aquariums are off the list for family activities.

The Planet- This type of vegan sees the detrimental effect that the animal agriculture industry is having on our planet. They’ve done the math, looked at the numbers and know that we cannot continue to treat the earth this way. They see the amount of pollution given off by the factory farms, they know that with the grain being fed to livestock- we could instead end world hunger with it. Those who are vegan for the environment are keen on protecting rainforests, recycling and living a low-waste lifestyle.

Your Health- Those who are vegan for their health are smart for going against the grain, and against what most doctors recommend for ‘optimal health’. They’ve done their research and they realize the many negative effects that all animal products have on the human body. Often, these people eat a whole-foods plant based diet, tons of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, legumes and nuts/seeds. They may have had/do have a health condition that encouraged them to go vegan for their health.
