Australian Dairy Farmers Lobby Against Plant-Based Milk

Australian Dairy Farmers (ADF) organization is lobbying the Australian Federal Government to prevent non-dairy alternatives from using the term ‘milk’.

Australian Dairy Farmers Lobby Against Plant-Based Milk

According to the Weekly Times, ADF President Terry Richardson has spoken out against plant-based alternative milk, calling them ‘dishonest’ especially in terms of being the same nutritional equivalent as dairy milk. 

The ADF would like the Australian Federal Government to follow the 2017 precedent set by the European Court of Justice, where it ruled that plant-based products could not use terms that were linked with dairy terms. Even if producers clarified that the product was plant-based.  

Speaking with the Weekly Times, Mr Richardson stated: “We are calling for changes to the food standards so that consumers trying to make a healthy choice at the supermarket have the benefit of transparent and accurate product labelling.”

Raise Vegan has previously reported that the FDA was considering a similar move in the USA.

Dairy Sales Dwindling

These moves to differentiate dairy from plant-based milk, appear to be a last-ditch effort by a dying industry. As Raise Vegan previously reported, sales of dairy milk in the USA alone plummeted by $1.1 billion in 2018.
