Plant Powered: Vegan Athlete Wins 6800 Km Race In Record Time
No one is asking vegan ultra-endurance cyclist Abdullah Zeinab where he gets his protein from! Zeinab recently competed in the Trans Am Bike Race, a race from the west coast of the United States to the east coast, winning the event in a speedy 16 days, 9 hours, and 56 minutes.
Zeinab’s Unusual Diet During The Race
Speaking to The Age Zeinab said his diet throughout the race consisted mainly of hash browns.
“I’d go in [to a diner] and say give me 10 or 12 serves of hash browns”. He’d then ask that the food be made quickly as he was competing in a race.
The Trans Am Bike Race is completely self-supported, meaning participants need to source their own food and shelter throughout the race. Participants aren’t allowed to have support people, nor are there stages or set breaks, making the race even more mentally and physically challenging.
On How To Push Through The Pain
Vegan athlete Zeinab spoke to The Age about his strategy for pushing through pain and how to keep going, despite any setbacks. Zeinab finds the best thing would be to pretend to have the memory wiping gadget, like those from ‘Men in Black’ so that you can wipe your memory for five minutes.
“If you’re in an intense amount of pain you have to focus on literally just the next pedal stroke. You start counting, ‘one, one, one, one’. That’s the technique to stop you from getting overwhelmed,” Zeinab further adds.
What do you think of Zeinab’s diet throughout the race? Do you think you could ride across America on a diet of hashbrowns? Who is your favorite vegan athlete? Let us know in the comments below.
