Can Cats Be Vegan? You May Get Prosecuted If You Said Yes

by | November 28, 2018

As  the great debate rages on in online forums and Facebook groups, to whether ‘can cats be vegan?’ The RSPCA has now weighted in on the conversation.

They pointed out: “Under the Animal Welfare Act, the law requires an owner to take reasonable steps to ensure that all the pet’s needs are met.

“This includes a healthy diet, as well as providing suitable living conditions, ability to behave normally, appropriate company and protection from pain, suffering, injury, and disease.”

In the worst cases where cats are so malnourished, guidelines say owners could face a hefty fine or even a jail sentence if convicted under the Animal Welfare Act.

The warning comes after the National Pet Show in Birmingham earlier this month showcased the latest in vegan pet food and non-meat alternatives, as owners look to spread their ethical diets onto their pets too.

The spokesman for the RSPCA added: “Cats are strict carnivores and depend on some very specific nutrients that are found in meat including taurine, vitamin A and arachidonic acid so can become seriously ill if they are fed a vegetarian or vegan diet.”

One in six pet food suppliers now offers vegan or vegetarian food for animals as owners embrace a new craze for plant based meals.

Damian Eadie, director of veggie pet food firm Benevo insisted there were no health concerns over feeding cats a plant-based diet, saying vets who disagreed were “suffering an unshakeable ideology”.

Cats definitely cannot be vegan. It would kill them. I have worked with animals for years and especially cats and dogs. Dogs CAN be vegan but for a cat they need the animal protein, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients for optimum health. They have a very short digestive tract that allows the optimum nutrients to be drawn from the food into their system. Unlike people who have LONG digestive tracts where the meat just putrefies in it. All creatures are not meant to be vegan. However, some do have the choice. Felines and felidae do not.

It’s strange to call anyone who isn’t capable of making judgments “vegan,” so I don’t think any cat can be vegan in that sense. However, there are many cats subsisting solely on manufactured vegan cat food. Some fail to thrive on this and, indeed, even develop urinary crystals and have to stop (mine did, but supposedly the Italian Amicat is better than the Evolution kibble we tried, so we haven’t explored all our avenues). Anyone making blanket statements about cats not being able to eat plant-derived diets because they are carnivores is ignoring the data and forgetting that even humans need to supplement B12 in order to maintain long-term health, so what’s the big deal if cats need fortification in their plant-only foods to pass for animal products?

If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Not that controversial, if you look at it this way.

We have not issued a warning to vegan pet owners and asked for the original story to be corrected. It is extremely unlikely we would be involved with an issue like this as we know vegans care deeply about their pets and like most loving owners would seek veterinary advice if their pet was distressed or unwell.

    Thank you for contacting us.

    Kind regards

    Dear Sirs, Madams,
You cannot fail to have been aware of the erroneous National Front Newspaper headlines end of November 2018 regarding claims that Vegan Cat owners were going to risk prison/jail for feeding cats vegan petfoods.

There was no named RSPCA alleged spokesperson in any of the articles….surely..the RSPCA should try and make sure any claims of “heads of the rspca” are valid and truthful !

I like others received much abuse and threats to report us and get us jailed…threatened with physical violence even…i had to keep deleting aggressive comments on my youtube vegan cat videos…

All this could be avoided….if the RSPCA stated the TRUTH and stopped this misinformation.

Vegan catfood is LEGALLY SOLD IN THE UK ! the RSPCA cannot be unaware of the British Petfood Authority criteria and standards for appropriate for species, digestibility etc of that Governement Organisation ! nor be ignorant of the existance of a BRITISH VEGAN CATFOOD manufacturer ! http://www.veggiepets.com ! as well as the Highly awarded Professor at Southamption University Dr Andrew Knight and his website http://www.vegepets.com !

It is time to have some show of ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR ! towards the public and all animals !
