IKEA announced their vegan hot dogs this past February as part of their contribution to providing more environmentally sustainable options for their customers.
“We are facing many challenges in the food production industry today and one of those challenges is that we need to be more sustainable,” said Michael La Cour, Managing Director at IKEA Food Services AB. “With the global reach that we have at IKEA, we believe that we have a responsibility and a great opportunity to serve food that is good for the planet.”

The IKEA vegan hot dogs are just one of many new plant-based foods that the company plans to offer in order to support a more environmentally-friendly food system. The brand already offers a vegan version of its signature Swedish meatballs, plant-based caviar, and dairy-free ice cream and doughnuts at in the U.K. Last June, the company announced that it will be launching dairy-free soft serve ice cream in time for summer 2019.
As part of their efforts in becoming more sustainable, Ikea has implemented measures which include initiating a food waste solution to cut its food waste to 50% by 2020 and investing in indoor vertical farming company Aerofarms, whose global headquarters are in Newark, New Jersey, operating a 70,000-square-foot indoor vertical farm that produces 2 million pounds of leafy greens per year. Over 200,000 kilograms of food was saved during Ikea’s financial year 2017 as part of its food waste program, which it calculates as 865 tons of carbon emissions, or nearly 450,000 meals.
