Furniture giant IKEA has announced they are releasing a new vegan soft serve ice cream in an effort to boost sustainability.

IKEA announced on their Instagram page, posting a picture of ice cream with the caption 100% plant-based, 100% delicious. Today we are sharing our ambitions to introduce plant-based ice cream to the IKEA Bistro. The development has started and we aim to bring this alternative to dairy-based soft ice to IKEA Bistros in Summer 2019″

Range Manager at IKEA food services, Gerry Dufresne, told Vegan Food And Living“We’re working closely with different suppliers to find the right taste and texture and are currently exploring three different alternatives, either based on oats, soy or fruits.”

The new vegan soft serve ice cream will be added to the menu alongside other vegan options including its vegan caviar, “Sjörapport” or “Seaweed Pearls,” made from kelp seaweed. The chain will also be releasing its first vegan hotdog across Europe after it had a successful trial period in Sweden which saw a 95% approval rating from consumers. After the release in Europe, it will hopefully be brought to American IKEA locations.

The brand recently promised to improve its eco-friendliness, and the introduction of new vegan items on the menu aligns with this goal. IKEA has seen the rising consumption of meat and dairy as a matter of global concern that needs to be addressed. Inter IKEA Group CEO, Torbjörn Lööf, said in a press release “Through our size and reach we have the opportunity to inspire and enable more than one billion people to live better lives, within the limits of the planet.”

The addition of new plant-based items to the IKEA menu, like it’s vegan soft serve ice cream. is not the only change the brand is making. They have also pledged to eliminate all single-use plastics from all their products worldwide, and have vowed to reduce their total climate footprint by approximately 70% per product. IKEA has also recently launched a range of children’s toys with the aim of raising awareness of endangered wildlife species. All of these actions have landed IKEA as being named by Forbes as a “pioneer in sustainability.”

Here’s hoping that the new IKEA vegan soft serve ice cream is hitting stores near us soon!
