KFC To Offer Vegan Chicken Alternatives!
Vegan chicken at KFC?!
Fast food chain KFC says it’s going to overhaul its menu to incorporate healthier choices, such as trialing a vegan chicken at UK locations later this year.
The chain, which is famous for its deep-fried chicken and fries, is aiming to cut back the whole menu’s calories by at least 20 percent per serving by 2025. The new and improved menu will even include healthier choices for consumers. The chain also says it’s going to try and provide free healthier sides for customers to have instead of the traditional side of fries. It is also going to include low or zero-calorie beverages to help further decrease calorie intake inside the restaurant.
The Mirror reported, “By 2020, the company plan to have more lunch and dinner options available under 600 calories, in line with Public Health England’s recent campaign”.
Head of food innovation for KFC UK, Victoria Robertson stated, “We know people are more passionate than ever about eating well, and we face a big challenge in shifting their perceptions of what we offer. We’ve done it before, though – the success of our Riceboxes has shown that our fans will go for lighter options from us. That said, we know any new menu and recipe changes will have to be just as tasty as today”.
The chain is also working on what it is now calling a ‘behavioral change program’ which is designed to help their customer to make healthier choices. There is a growing number of consumers in the UK who are already choosing healthier options, and restaurants and supermarkets are taking notice.

Perhaps the biggest game-changing move in the UK market was when supermarket giant, Tesco, released their own line of vegan food called Wicked Food created by chefs Chad and Derek Sarno. The supermarket giant has claimed to already have sold over 1.75 million plant-based meals from this range nationwide since the release of the line in January.
KFC restaurants across the UK faced a chicken shortage earlier this year when a supplier failed to deliver to the 900 KFC stores across the country, and vegan chicken manufacturer, Quorn, offered the chain their products on Twitter. The brand tweeted KFC “let us know if we can share some Quorn Crispy Nuggets for a meat-free alternative for your customers!”
Sources of KFC’s new vegan chicken haven’t been revealed to the public yet, but could Quorn’s joke have some truth behind it?
“This is about providing choice,” said Roberston, “and offering delicious, signature KFC taste that just happens to be lighter.”
