To homeschool children is an option that many parents take for a number of reasons. Sometimes, a child may need to be homeschooled for health reasons that make them unable to follow a typical class schedule. Other times, you just know that your child will thrive from a more non-traditional and personalized educational path carried out by either you, an in-home teacher or even online. According to 2012 statistics from the NCES, around 1.8 million children in the United States are homeschooled. Homeschooling refers to a child’s at-home education, that is to say, outside of public and private institutions and schools. In order to begin the process of homeschooling, your best bet is, to begin with contacting your state’s education association to make a game plan.                                             

Benefits of Homeschool

There are many benefits to homeschooling your children. One of the perhaps best benefits if the one-on-one attention that they can get from either you or a private tutor. Grammar is a little tricky for them? Thanks to the power of homeschooling, they will be free to get personalized help on it without having to raise their hand in a classroom full of other children. Another benefit is that there are some liberties you can take to personalize their education, as long as you stay within your state or country guidelines. You can work around volunteer work and extracurriculars with homeschooling, instead of the other way around.

Some of the downsides to homeschooling are also important to note if you are considering this path for your child. Your child may or may not have the same social life that they would if they were in school (the institution), especially if they were to begin at a young age. Another key downside is not learning their subjects from “qualified” sources. For example, if you will be the one teaching your child and math really isn’t your strong suit, it would be best to hire an in-home math teacher so that your child receives the best home education that they can.
