If there’s one thing that kind of stands between the mommy-to-be glow and you, it has to be the tired puffy eyes with a dark ring beneath. In case you too are dealing with under eye dark circles during pregnancy, know that you’re not alone and there are natural ways to combat them.

Fatigue is a common problem that most women face during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester (although many women can attest to it continuing on through the third trimester) Dark under eye circles don’t affect only pregnant women who aren’t able to sleep through the night, but others with a collagen deficiency. Collagen is the responsible protein for keeping your skin perfectly elastic and when there is a lack of collagen, the skin thins which gives the appearance of dark under eyes because your blood vessels are more exposed. No matter whether you got your under eye dark circles during pregnancy or had them from before, there is an abundance of natural remedies to help alleviate the look of them.

Here are three all-natural remedies to help fight the appearance of dark under eyes during pregnancy and beyond.

Cucumber

Relaxing with some cucumber slices over your eyes isn’t just a Hollywood sham, it actually works. Cut a chilled cucumber into  ¼ inch slices and place one over each eye. Pop in some tunes or practice some light meditation for ten minutes as you relax and let the cucumber do it’s magic. The cucumber works for a number of reasons; it provides a cooling effect to the eye area and is packed in Vitamins C and K.

Cold Tea Bags

Choose your favorite antioxidant-rich tea (an organic green tea is a great choice) to help relax and rejuvenate your tired eyes and dark circles. Steep two tea bags in distilled water and let them sit in the fridge for twenty minutes or until cold. Lay back and place a cold tea bag over each eye and listen to your favorite audiobook or podcast for twenty minutes. Don’t forget to make yourself a cup of tea to drink afterwards.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

As a vegan, you should already have this essential item laying around somewhere but if not, you can grab some trusty coconut oil at your local Target or Trader Joe’s. After cleansing your face, gently massage a pea sized amount under your eyes to help reduce inflammation as well as correct your dark under eye spots. Coconut oil is thought to lighten any dark spots or bruising on the body but results have been mixed as far as achieving desired results.
