Dandruff isn’t fun- it’s uncomfortable, itchy, and it doesn’t look great either. Although it can be caused by a multitude of factors, it’s not impossible to get relief and fight it. Unfortunately for vegans, we can’t simply turn to Head and Shoulders since they are no cruelty-free. Despite there being some vegan dandruff shampoos on the market including the Jason Dandruff Relief Shampoo, natural remedies usually tend to be cheaper and safer for those with sensitive skin as well as children. Here are the three best vegan ways to get rid of dandruff at home.

Tea Tree Oil
It’s time to bust out your essential oils because tea tree oil will continue to fix any and all of your life problems. (Seriously, it’s almost as important to have at home as coconut oil) Simply squeeze a few drops into your shampoo bottle and you’re good to go! If you use shampoo solids as I do, while you still have suds in your hair, add one small drop to your hands and massage throughout your scalp, focusing on your problem areas. You can alternatively make your own tea tree oil shampoo solids if you suffer from dandruff often.
Repair your dry scalp with some ever-so-trusty coconut oil. Before washing your hair, melt a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil in your hands by rubbing them together and massage into your scalp. Let the coconut oil sit as long as you can allow, overnight is great but 30 minutes will do if you’re cutting it short on time. Rinse the coconut oil out in the shower and shampoo and condition as you normally would.
Don’t forget about the healing properties that lemon has on your skin. As soon as the first signs of dandruff appear, try this hack that can be used daily to zap dandruff out of your life. In a small spray bottle with one part lemon to one part water, carefully spray the mixture on your scalp, avoiding hair as much as you can help. Let sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing and shampooing. For an added benefit, add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to your spray. Note that lemon may naturally bleach your hair over time, especially if you expose yourself to direct sunlight while letting the mixture rest in your hair.
