The Shock Of Discovering MIL Manipulated Son Into Changing Newborn’s Name
Imagine the shock and horror of a woman, still recovering from C-section, on discovering MIL manipulated son into changing newborn’s name. Absolutely, the stuff of nightmares!
Some people are lucky enough to have mothers-in-law (MIL) who know and respect their place when it comes to their grown children’s families. They’re not pushy, invasive or manipulative; instead, they’re supportive and helpful. In my world, we call them unicorns.

The Shock Of Discovering MIL Manipulated Son into Changing Newborn’s Name
I’m not going to tell you which side of the in-law coin I was dealt, but let’s just say that it wasn’t pretty, thankfully though, I never had to deal with anything as bad as one poor woman whose mother-in-law manipulated her son to change their baby’s name, while she was recovering from an emergency c-section.
Yes, you read that right. She manipulated her son into changing their baby’s name while the new mom was recovering. Cue jaws dropping everywhere.
The mom wrote into an advice column anonymously to vent. It apparently took the new mom almost two months to discover the infraction. She was looking for her sons’ social security card and birth certificates to file them away safely. Needless to say, mom was shocked and hurt when she found the documents and saw that her sons’ name was spelled ‘Finlay’ instead of ‘Finley’ like she and her husband had agreed upon before their son was born.
Mom goes on to say that she should have been clued into the spelling change when the mother-in-law sent a personalized gift to her grandchild with his middle name spelled ‘Finlay.’ What makes this whole drama even worse, in my opinion, is that ‘grandma’ wasn’t even present at the birth. She master-manipulated her son over the phone.
The MIL had at first tried to convince her son to change the baby’s first name, but apparently, daddy still had some of his ba**s intact and refused, only allowing himself to be guilt-tripped into changing the spelling of the baby’s middle name. MIL thought that ‘Finlay’ was more masculine than ‘Finley.’
Supposedly the husband and wife are working through this horrible breach of trust, but the mom has said she no longer wants a relationship with her MIL. You can read the comments on the column here.
What the actual f*** was he thinking? If that were my husband, his bags would have been packed the second we got home from the hospital, and he would’ve been told to go live with his mommy, permanently.
