Woman fired for being pregnant from Jersey Mike’s
It seems every day we’re reading stories about people being fired for ridiculous reasons, but one Washington state woman was fired for being pregnant. Yep, she needed time off to give birth, so they fired her.
Kameisha Denton, a former employee of popular sub chain store Jersey Mike’s, shared a screenshot of a text message conversation between her and her former boss on Facebook. The post quickly went viral and you can see just why.
The messages show Kameisha asking her manager for an updated schedule after realizing she wasn’t assigned any shifts. The manager spent no time beating around the bush and went straight into telling her that she was fired for being pregnant.
He got straight to the point of telling her that she was fired because ‘it’s not a good time to have someone who will be leaving for maternity leave in several months.’ The keyword here being SEVERAL months. Meaning more than one or two.
Luckily for Kameisha though, Washington state law states it’s “unfair practice” for an employer to refuse to hire or promote, terminate or demote, a woman due to pregnancy or childbirth.
Tim Trieb, owner of the Jersey Mike’s franchise where Kameisha worked has said it is company policy to treat everyone equally and that this incident ‘never ever should have happened.’ As for the manager who fired her, he resigned according to KIRO-TV.
Kameisha was offered her job back at the Jersey Mike’s store where she was fired for being pregnant, but understandably turned down the offer.
