Are Period Symptoms Taking Over Your Life? Going Vegan Can Help!

by | September 8, 2018

Period symptoms vary from woman to woman. Some barely get any, others get a whole range of symptoms. Anyone who’s had menstrual cramps knows how ugly they can be. The ferocity differs from woman to woman.

Some ladies barely get any pain, while others—like food blogger Nivea Mullings—have cramps so incapacitating that it can feel like you’re  “being weighed down by a week of misery every single month.”

“It felt like someone was dragging a hot knife into my abdomen,” Mullings told Women’s Health magazine.

Her pain was so intense that she regularly had to skip work, school, family functions, and many social events. She was in agony and found herself so weak and tired that she couldn’t even go for a simple walk. She tried the usual treatments but nothing seemed to dull the pain.

“Simply put, my period symptoms were taking over my life,” said Mullings.

At a visit to her doctor, Mullings saw a poster promoting the benefits of anti-inflammatory foods. She decided to look into it, and figured she’d give veganism a try.

“I noticed a difference after just a month of eating vegan,” she said.

In the beginning, she still had some of the usual period symptoms like cramps, fatigue and feeling bloated. After some months went by, her pain started to lesson until it eventually went unnoticed. She tributes her spike in energy and Joi de Vivre with eating plant-based foods.

Mullings’ being of Jamaican descent, enjoys cooking up flavorful spicy foods. “I make an amazing curry chickpea dish that’s packed with just as much flavor [as the meat dishes she ate growing up],” she says.

She has been living a vegan lifestyle for over a year and a half. Although she says that some months are easier than others dealing with period symptoms, embracing veganism has given her a renewed lease on life.

Mullings lives in the Bronx with her husband, Geoff, who supportively turned vegan with her. She has a food blog, The Black Vegan Diaries, where she talks about veganism and is also on Instagram.
