by | April 17, 2019

Joker goes vegan? Famous for being a sadistic villain in the DC universe, the joker is the last person you would expect to be vegan, right? Wrong. In fact, he’s been vegan longer than we thought…

To the joy of DC fans around the world (including myself), it was announced that we will have a movie surrounding the Joker- who he really is and how he came to be which appears to be very similar to the Venom movie featuring Tom Hardy which came out last year. The next actor who will fill these large shoes? The openly vegan Joaquin Phoenix.

As a well-known activist, Phoenix is very far from being new to veganism. In an interview with Collider, he touched on how and why he went vegan which followed a fishing trip as a child. He has worked closely with the organization Mercy for Animals, narrating their deep undercover investigation into a pork supplier working for Walmart.

I think it made me distrustful, and angry and frightened of humans, humanity. I just thought it was such a gross abuse of power in a way. I think during that moment we knew that we were not going to eat meat anymore.

Joaquin Phoenix isn’t the first vegan Joker that DC has worked with either. Following a series of very talented actors who have taken on this role including Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, the ultimate vegan babe Jared Leto stepped into the DC universe with a body covered in ink and crazy green hair.

Jared Leto starred in Suicide Squad as a weird, pimped-out rendition of the joker back in 2016 alongside actors Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, and Jai Courtney. Leto of the band 30 Seconds to Mars has been vegan for a while, after previously being vegetarian, and he commonly attributes this to how he is able to stay looking so youthful.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he is mentioned how a plant-based diet has done wonders for him keeping his youth. If you don’t believe it, just take a look at a recent photo of his from Instagram. For the record, he is 47 years old.

I’ve been that way (healthy) for a long time- 20 solid years of eating vegan/vegetarian and taking care of myself. That probably helps the preservation process.

I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited to see Joaquin Phoniex’s interpretation as this classic comic-book villain. Not to mention, it is great to see more and more very openly vegan and animal rights activist celebrities popping up in Hollywood.
