Spirulina is an algae that can be taken as a dietary supplement. It is considered a superfood due to its high nutritional content and health benefits. It has a high protein, vitamin and iron content, making it an excellent dietary supplement for people on a vegan diet. Here’s a wonderful way to incorporate spirulina in your diet.

Emerald Energizer Vegan Smoothie Recipe
Research suggests that spirulina has amazing antioxidant and inflammation-reducing properties, as well as being great for regulating immune system.
One tablespoon of dried spirulina contains:
- 20 calories
- 4.02 g of protein
- 1.67 g of carbohydrate
- 0.54 g of fat
- 8 milligrams (mg) of calcium
- 2 mg of iron
- 14 mg of magnesium
- 8 mg of phosphorous
- 95 mg of potassium
- 73 mg of sodium
- 0.7 mg of vitamin C
- Spirulina also has thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, and vitamins B-6, A, and K.

As a runner, spring is when I really start to gear up the mileage. The weather is getting a little warmer and the days are getting longer. I love to whip up this Emerald Energizer Vegan Smoothie in the mornings, or any time of day when I feel like I need a boost of energy.
Ingredients
- 4 ounces (115 g) vanilla almond milk
- 2 cups (400 g) pineapple, peeled, cubed
- 1 stalk celery, diced
- 2 cups (60 g) spinach
- 2tsp (6 g) Spirulina flakes
- 2 cups (260 g) ice cubes
- sweetener, to taste
Directions
- Dump all of the ingredients above into a blender and secure the lid.
- Turn the blender on and increase to the highest speed slowly.
- Blend for one minute.
- Serve immediately.
