I was sixteen when I got my first own smartphone. I felt like I owned the world. Kids do have a tendency to indulge in technology heavily and that at times can worry parents. Trying to fit with the masses, kids forget that they’re still answerable to someone. In such an incident involving a kid who didn’t bother (because now he has no options) to reply to his father’s text messages finally realized he is the son of his DAD. The kid’s father out of ‘frustration’ coded complicated tech into a smartphone app, that’ll put his kid in a ‘do or don’t’ situation.

This news is proof that frustration can be sometimes utterly creative. Like here the frustrated dad ends up with a tech app on the table. His son, Ben got a new phone (from dad) and he goes to secondary school. The idea behind giving his son a smartphone was to communicate while he’ll be away. Unexpectedly, what dad Nick thought would be a blessing, turned frustrating.

Son Ben, after he got the smartphone didn’t bother to reply to his dad’s enquires because according to dad Nick, ‘the phone was smart’ and Ben delved into playing games and watching videos keeping the phone silent. According to Nick on his website, he rarely received a reply from his kid because either he (Ben) was unaware of any texts (he kept the phone on silent) or because Ben may feel embarrassed to speak to dad amidst friends.

Nick Herbert, the inventor of app writes on the website-

“There are times that I need to get a message to him and he has no way of knowing that the call or text he ignores/doesn’t see is important or not, and I have no way of knowing if he has seen it (and I mean really seen it and not just moved it so he can get on with his game). There are messaging apps that tell you when a message is delivered and seen, but the point is the message can be ignored or not seen because he didn’t hear it.

During the development process I spoke to Ben and showed him the designs and thinking behind the app and he likes the idea because he will know that if he gets one of these messages then he will always hear it and will know it’s important. He will also have the ability to send me these messages – so there is a mutual understanding that using Respond ASAP is only for important things and not because he needs new batteries for his Xbox controller.”

How the App Works

The app conquers a phone’s screen with an alarm (amid whatever the user is doing) as soon as any message is received, putting the phone’s user with two choices- to snooze message for three minutes, or respond ASAP (no way out of it). And after the phone’s user respond in either way, the sender gets a confirmation that the text was received. Until now the app had been reportedly downloaded 1, 30,000 times. Looks like protective parents all over the world finally got to checkmate their smarty kids with this app.

The app would also allow users on both sides to override each other’s devices in an emergency. Although the app’s designer admitted there’s “nothing stopping” someone from deleting the app from the phone, for the most part, the app helps to soothe nerves of many worried parents. The app retails at four plans, each with its unique (and of course better with price) options. Herbert reportedly mentioned this app isn’t meant to bug kids and (to many kid’s relief) should be used for emergencies.

Kids are now exposed to a world, which we had no idea when we were children. There is a quantum leap in over-the-air communication and this greatly instigates concern among parents, because parents expect updates from kids more than ever. What do you think? Let us know in the comment below.
