Why is Spirulina gaining popularity?

Classified in the Superfood category, Spirulina is a nutrient-rich microalga that is gaining popularity for its supposed health benefits.

According to an article published in Live Science, Spirulina is rich in certain nutrients that aren’t found in normal vitamins.

As per the FDA, this supposed super-food contains significant amounts of potassium, niacin, magnesium, calcium, iron, and Vitamin B complex. Up to 60% of Spirulina’s dry weight is made up of protein.

According to a review published by the Journal of International Medical Research, the blue-green algae- Spirulina when included in the diet as an alternative to iron supplements, “not only alleviates the anemia of pregnancy but also has an impact on the fetal and maternal outcomes”.

The review concluded: “Thus the simple blue-green algae, Spirulina, is a multi-purpose panacea for many ills plaguing our planet, and help towards removing the root causes in inequity in sustainable development and women empowerment.”
