Five Fun Family Activities in LA Besides Disneyland and Universal Studios

by | April 19, 2019

Los Angeles is one of the largest (and in my opinion, most fun) places to go on a family vacation. Growing up in Nor Cal, my family drove down south fairly often to do major theme parks, notably Disneyland. Although both Disney and Universal Studios are arguably the best way to spend a family vacation in So-Cal, sometimes you want to try something a little different, or maybe you simply want to supplement your Disneyland trip with other activities if you’ll be in LA beyond a couple of days. Here are five of the most family-friendly and entertaining things to do in LA besides theme parks.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum

With locations around the world, Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum on Hollywood Boulevard is an insanely fun museum for both you and the kids. Filled with science, creepy and kooky exhibits, and interactive pieces this is a must-do during your trip.

If the weather will be nice during your trip to LA, it would be unforgivable to skip out on the beautiful California beaches! Although Venice Beach is extremely popular, Santa Monica tends to be the local and tourist favorite. Enjoy the rides, games and sand all in one place!

Hollywood Star Walk of Fame

Although an obvious thing to do, it’s still worth mentioning because despite all of the times I’ve been to LA, it was only last spring when I first made it to Hollywood Boulevard to follow the pink stars on the streets of the “City of Angels.” With favorites you’ll love such as David Bowie, Selena Quintanilla, and Marilyn Monroe and favorites your kids will love like Shrek, Jack Black, and Mickey Mouse, this walk is a fun way to explore the street performers and eccentric shops along the way while searching for your favorite celebrities.

The Los Angles County Museum of Art, or LACMA, is the largest museum this far on the western end of the USA and it’s one that people from all over the globe come to visit. Famous for the LACMA lights, the “Levitated Mass” rock which you can pretend to be holding, and the interactive yellow spaghetti-like “Penetrable” (which unfortunately is no longer showing), LACMA holds a special place in the hearts of all Americans, especially Californians. If your children are old enough, this museum is a must-see!

Griffith Observatory

Do your children like science? Let them enjoy the telescopes at the Griffith Observatory while you marvel at the great view of the Hollywood sign! Griffith Park, where the observatory is located, has other attractions such as a botanical garden, golf course and hiking trails.
